“Using instruments instead of voice is perhaps perverse to this title,” Leonor de Lera writes in the notes to the debut CD of the ensemble L’Estro d’Orfeo.
The title Altri Canti d’Amor is derived from a madrigal by Monteverdi that opens a series of arrangements of vocal compositions from the seventeenth century. At that time it was an ideal to imitate the human voice on instruments as much as possible.
If this was the case, composers arranged their madrigals themselves for the most important instrumental ensembles. The six musicians of the Spanish ensemble sing the historically sound instruments in works by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Barbara Strozzi, Biagio Marini, Tarquinio Merula and some mid-century gods from the first half of the seventeenth century.
They play exceptionally skillfully their historical instruments: violin, gamba, theorbo, baroque guitar, zinc and harpsichord. Between the companies they also perform compositions that are really meant for instruments, but the difference with the love songs without words is barely perceptible.
The performances are recorded in a small baroque church in Cantabria, where the amorous sounds of L’Estro d’Orfeo are carried on wings by the generous reverberation.
